The process of classifying the items that are stocked by your company is done by means of splitting the item into segments.
Item segmentation allows you to use up to six categories in which to organise your stock. This is of great assistance to those employees that work with items and need to be able to locate these quickly in the system. Item segmentation also allows you to couple generic items with one another.
Each of the six categories that you are able to differentiate the item by, can contain up to 35 characters, which makes the search and cross-reference abilities of this routine very powerful and precise.
Segmentation methods
For flexibility purposes, the following two segmentation methods are available. Click to expand each section.
Segmentation by delimiter
This allows you to split the item code into different segments using any non-numerical (preferably) or numerical character. A blank could also be valid as a delimiter.
Example:
If you define the segmentation type as follows:
- Delimiters are a hyphen <-> and a slash >
- Blank delimiters are allowed for the segmentation type (i.e. the Blank as delimiter field is set to YES)
- The Number of segments is set to 4
- The Primary segment is segment 2 and you enter your Item code in the Item file as such:
MFGX/123456 BB*99, the segments, after segmentation, will contain the following values:
Segment | Value |
---|---|
1 | MFGX |
2 | 123456 |
3 | BB*99 |
4 | Blank |
5 | Blank |
6 | Blank |
Primary Segment | 123456 |
Segmentation by length
This allows you to split the item code into different segments according to the valid length (i.e. number of characters allowed per segment).
Example:
If you define the segmentation type as follows:
- The length of the segments are: 4.6.5.5.2.4
- The Primary segment is segment 2 and you enter your Item code in the Item file as such:
MFGX123456BB*99ZZZZZQQPPPP, the segments, after segmentation, will contain the following values:
Segment | Value |
---|---|
1 | MFGX |
2 | 123456 |
3 | BB*99 |
4 | ZZZZZ |
5 | |
6 | PPPP |
Primary Segment | 123456 |
The Item segmentation types table can also be used to denote that a validation is to be performed at item entry, checking that the item is entered according to a pre-defined structure, using values in the Item segment value table.
When the segmentation characteristics for an entry in this table are changed, the Item file is updated with the new item segment values.
